I listened to the audio book for a long time ago and far away by Paul Hirsch, Master Editor and fantastic storyteller. Hirsch worked on many fantastic films with many incredible directors, most importantly, a major relationship with the incredible autour Brian De Palma and George Lucas and Star Wars. Harris describes the process of cutting film and going from a movie Ola to a sit like a a large format editor where large spools of film are able to be shown, eventually all the way to Avid, Final Cut Pro and digital editing. Hirsch is a constant Movie Maker and filmmaker understanding and explaining the incredible collaborative nature of filmmaking and the way that the editor works with a director to make a picture. On early films. He was even allowed to visit the set watch the filming, and most importantly, he would review the dailies every day with the director. This kind of access and collaboration is not seen anymore. Unfortunately, he describes as everyone can now just view the dailies from their computer with a special code, originally magical DVDs and hard drives and other things but now it just streams right to your computer. But he misses that interaction with the director. Truly a guide to filmmaking as well as a history of filmmaking and some great behind the scenes stories from all your favorite films, which it turned out are all edited by Paul hearse also includes stories about John Hughes and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Again, it's a book that can't be missed, and it's excellent in audiobook form. You won't want to turn it off, you'll enjoy a long time ago in a cutting room Far, far away.
