1n2 Weekly — VMS gets a roster

The largest single week of file creation we have ever had to count.
By the editors of The 1n2 Review

This was the week the Virtual Model Service stopped being a directory and became a thing with contents. Across its two halves, something north of nine thousand files landed in seven days — the biggest single-week push in this archive's recorded history, and that is counting against weeks when an entire fighting game was being tweened frame by frame.

Scale as a design decision

There is a particular 1n2 move being made here and it is worth naming. Most people building a gallery build the gallery first and then look for things to put in it. The habit on display in VMS is the opposite: generate at a scale no human could curate by hand, then build the apparatus that makes the pile navigable. It is the same instinct behind the WCN archive's sixteen hundred episodes and Artist Fighter's thousands of tweened frames.

The media layer

Alongside it the media directory took six hundred and fifty-odd files — the plumbing that turns a heap of generated images into something with thumbnails, sizes and a manifest. Unexciting, and the difference between a folder and a product.

VMS is not on the public roster and we are not going to pretend to know whether it will be. But a week like this is how you can tell, from the outside, where the attention went.
