Today in Bitcoin

“Good morning, Bitcoin.” The daily news desk, mined from the archive, not from memory.

The roster

Today in Bitcoin had one anchor and, for its first hundred days, two regulars. Thomas Hunt opens 233 of 233 broadcasts. Tone Vays delivered a daily “check of the current markets” in 55 episodes, from 2017-07-15 to 2017-10-08, usually from whatever European conference he was at that week. Jimmy Song gave “a check of the Bitcoin scaling” — later “the current technology conditions” — in 33 episodes, from 2017-07-17 to 2017-11-15. Jeffrey “Vortex” Jones dropped in for occasional commentary (3 episodes). Whisper’s spelling of everyone’s surname is a lottery: Vays, Veys, Vase, Phase, Vaze — all the same man.

Both lines hit zero in the same season. Tone’s last market check is 2017-10-08; Jimmy’s last tech check is 2017-11-15. Neither break was announced.

Airtime, measured — not just appearances

Counting appearances flatters nobody; minutes tell the real story. Using the Whisper timestamps, each guest’s window runs from his on-air introduction (“we’re joined by…”) to the next detected handoff or the end of the show. By that measure Tone Vays logged roughly 446 minutes across 54 of his 55 market checks — about 8 minutes per visit, peaking in August 2017 (~194 min) as the SegWit countdown ran. Jimmy Song’s tech checks were tighter: roughly 132 minutes over 33 segments, a disciplined ~3-minute median.

Approximate by construction: the window includes Thomas’s side of the conversation and assumes the guest holds the floor until the next handoff phrase. In 21 of Tone’s 54 windows no closing handoff was found and the window runs to the end of the show — treat his totals as an upper bound. One Tone appearance (2017-07-15) had no detectable intro and is excluded.

The departures, as the tape tells it
Tone Vays — last check, 2017-10-08

His final segment went out live from the Hackers Congress in Prague. It sounds like every other one — which is the point. There is no farewell episode anywhere in the corpus.

“we're joined by Tone Vays. How's it going, Tone? Going good. Last day here at the conference, it will be fun.”2017-10-08
Jimmy Song — last check, 2017-11-15

Jimmy’s segment outlived Tone’s by a month, resurfacing twice in mid-November from the MadTour before stopping for good. Also no goodbye. Ten weeks later he is “friend of the show” with a new job.

“joined by Jimmy Song for a check of the current technology. How's it going, Jimmy? It's going great.”2017-11-15
“congratulations to Bitcoin developer Jimmy Song, friend of the show who is now at blockchain capital”2018-01-25

So did the co-hosts quit? The honest answer from the transcripts: the daily segments ended in the fall of 2017, without an on-air goodbye from either man, and never came back — even when the show itself came back live in January 2018. The clearest after-the-fact statement on tape is Thomas answering a viewer question about the network in February 2018, describing both former regulars as proprietors of their own channels:

“tone Vaze has his own channel. Jimmy Song has a channel. Adam Meister has his own channel”2018-02-09

Whatever was said off the air stayed off the air. The tape only shows the segments stopping, three weeks apart, while the anchor kept reading the news alone for another three years.

One week in Berlin: Paloma

The only person other than Thomas to co-anchor the desk appears for a handful of October 2017 episodes recorded in Berlin, while the MadTour was staying with her and her partner. Whisper hears the name as “Paloma Cata” once and “Paloma Carter” once; this site will not guess at the correct spelling beyond what the tape says.

“Good morning, Bitcoin. Today's the first October 2017. I'm Paloma Cata with Thomas Hunt.”2017-10-01
“Paloma and Justin have been hosting me in Berlin. It's been a really great week here.”2017-10-05
And the anchor

Thomas closed the European leg the way the show deserved:

“This is my last episode from Europe. I'm getting on a plane tomorrow, then I'm getting on another plane, then I'm getting on another plane”2017-11-19
