The all-caps headline-as-thesis style — borrowed straight from tabloid front pages — becomes the default for the next two years.

The political spine of the year is the Iraq surge. Bush has authorised 20,000 more troops in January; Petraeus arrives in Baghdad; the violence peaks before subsiding.
